About Our Challenge

My name is Roy Grimes, in 2006 I lost my brother Nathan (pic on right) to S.U.D.E.P (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy) Before his death, I had never even heard of S.U.D.E.P, yet in the UK over 500 deaths every year are attributed to this. Epilepsy Bereaved work tirelessly to prevent unnecessary deaths from S.U.D.E.P.

After Nathan's death, I created a Facebook support group for those who had similar experiences with S.U.D.E.P. I was staggered at how many people joined my group. Many of whom, like myself had never realized the life threatening risks associated with epilepsy. Engaging with others who had similar experiences proved to be a very cathartic way of dealing with my own loss. The group helped me, as much as I hope it helped others.

Recently, completely unrelated to epilepsy or S.U.D.E.P  myself and Sean have been engaged in a weight loss and fitness regime. We began this purely for personal reasons of needing to shed loads of weight. I was clinically Obese, weighing in at nearly 21 stone! Sean, who is a giant of a man, was also obese.

When we began this process, we had no idea where it would lead. In February 2013 following some initial weight loss success, Sean and I spoke about what we could do to keep us motivated to continue working hard towards our fitness goals. At this point the idea of a cycle challenge was born. My first reaction to Sean's suggestion of cycling from Lands End to John O' Groats was filled with several expletives! After sleeping on the idea however, and in a moment of sheer insanity, I agreed! Now once you agree something with Sean, you are committed. Like I said, the man's a giant!!!

We wanted to accomplish something more productive than simply cycling for fun, so we agreed this challenge should be done for charity.

For me, there could only be one charity that I wanted to work this hard for and Sean kindly agreed that he too would do the cycle challenge for Epilepsy Bereaved!

So now, all we needed was a name. After careful consideration, and with ensuing hilarity, we decided on 'Chubb's Cycle Challenge'! We felt the name reflected both the personal weight loss and fitness journey we would have to embark on as well as the actual cycle challenge itself.

I can hardly believe that this was only decided on just two weeks ago! We have been so consumed by the excitement of the challenge and the prospect of raising lots of money for a very worthy cause.

Yes Sean and I are still on the chubby side, but keep your eyes open, because that is about to change. As we shed the lbs, we hope to be gain many more pounds of the monetary kind.

Well, I have waffled on enough for now, please check in regularly to keep an eye on our progress, and if you are able, any donations will be gratefully received.
